ROOSEVELT ATTACKED
NEW DEAL ".SOCIALISM"'
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27. Political observers were busy to-day discussing the probable effects of a speech attacking President Roosevelt which the ex-Governor of New York State, Mr. Alfred Smith, made here last night. It was broadcast all over the United States.
'Mr. Smith was Democratic candidate for the Presidency in 1923. when Mr. Hoover wa3 elected, and for many years was one of Mr. Roosevelt's closest friends. He denounced the "New Deal" and all its works mercilessly, but refrained from a personal attack on the President.
The burden of his complaint was that the Democrats in office had completely ignored the programme on which Ihey liad been elected and that the present Administration was to all intents .and purposes a Socialist one. i-The moat obvious implication of Smith's break with theT Democrats is that Mr. Roosevelt may lose a' large 'ijumber of vitally important votes in New York, where Mr. Smith is popular.
