RUGBY TOURNAMENT

BIG EASTER FIXTURE MARIST TEAMS COMING COMMITTEE AT WORK Organisation work in connection with the annual tournament of North Island .Marist Rugby football clubs, to be held in Gisborne during the Easter holidays, is approaching its final stages, and everything points to a most successful issue in connection with the Spillane Cup competition, in which during recent, years the Gisborne Celtic club has taken a prominent part.

The decision to grant the tournament to (Jisborne was reached at a conference held in Wanganui last year, when the tournament was held in that centre, and since July last preliminary work has been proceeding in this district. A committee representing the Gisborne Celtic and Marist clubs has. the arrangements in hand, and has been fortunate in enlisting the co-operation of Mr. A. Cassm, whose experience in organising for hockey tournaments and other fixtures on a large scale has been signalised on a number of occasions in the past. At a meeting of the committee hold on Saturday afternoon, members of the two clubs concerned were in attendance, and received a report on the work already carried out. Mr. E. T. Brosnahan presided over the meeting, and there were present 50 members of the two clubs, who pledged their full co-operation in the work still to be done. Much satisfaction wa9 expressed in regard to the work already carried out. In connection with the art union now in progress, with the object of raising funds for the tournament, Mr. G. Hewson gave a review of the success achieved to date, and asked members of the two clubs to press the salei as rapidly as possible, as only six weeks remained in which to realise the objective set for this section of the preparations. All present undertook to sell two books each, and to report to the joint honorary secretaries, Messrs. G. Hewson and E. O'Halloran, or to the committee chairman, Mr. Brosnahan, respecting their progress. A small subcommittee was appointed to arrange for the sales of tickets through business houses, and for the display of postern and other matter relating to the art union. HELP FOR VISITING TEAMS The chairman indicated that correspondence with the clubs outside Gisborne interested in the tournament had been carried on with vigour, and otters had been made to render all assistance possible to the visiting teams. Erom the date of the first meeting of the committee in July last, the various clubs had been communicated with from time to time, and kept in touch with all the work of the local organisation. Exceptionally keen prices had been secured for the transport of the teams, and in this way the success of the tournament had been assured, as far as possible, since the doubts of certain clubs as to the financial outlay involved in making the trip to Gisborne had been allayed. A tentative entertainment programme was submitted for the approval ot the meeting and was endorsed, Messrs. Hewson and Cassin being authorised to attend to the allocation of the various visiting teams to different hotels, and to arrange for the display of trophies in shop windows as a means of promoting public interest. The question of issuing season tickets for the tournament was considered by the committee.

It was reported that the following teams are expected to take part in the Spillane Cup competition: Wellington Marist Old Boys, Auckland Marist Old Boys, Wanganui, Hamilton, Napier, St. Patrick's College Old Boys, and the Gisborne Celtic and Marist Old Boys clubs.
