ROWING CHALLENGE

OFFICIAL CREW BEATEN POVERTY BAY CLUB RACE NEW MAIDEN. CLASS REPS. drawing away over the lust quarter of a mile after an even contest, for the greater part of the distance, a challenge Four comprising W. Glover, str., K. Aluir. K. Harris, and F. Newman registered a convincing victory over the officially-selected maiden representative tour in a contest under the auspices ol the Poverty Bay Rowing Club on Saturdav evening. * The distance of the race was one mile, the course to be rowed in the maiden class at the forthcoming regatta for the L.V.A. Shield, at Napier. The official crew comprised R. Neilson, str., H. Duckworth. C. Smyfhe, and P. Mediation, and was expected to give a good account of itself in the regatta. Its performance against Glover's challenge crew was a good one. hut did not show the finish expected of the crew, and Glover s win by a. clear length created general surprise. At the start Ne'ilson was a little slow off the mark, and had to make up distance after settling his crew down. Glover held a slight lead after the first quarter of a mile, but his opponent drew up, and at the Roebuck road bridge Neilson's boat was almost half a lenßi in the lead. Level terms were regained l.v Glover at Ballance street, bridge, and the boats raced to Derby street without apparent advantage to either crew. Entering on the. last quarter of a mile, however. Glover showed an unexpected capacity for sprinting, and he. rowed away from his opponent to win by a clear length.

> GISBORNE CLUB NEW YEAR FOURS SERIES The Gisbonie Rowing Club's New Year fours series, over three-quarters of a mile, was completed over the week-end. The first race was held on Friday evening and the semi-final* were rowed off on Saturday. In the first round D. Wilson, str., E. Walton, J. Nelson, and K. Ford beat A. W. Cleaver, str., H. Wall, A. Redmond, and J- Wilkins. Wilson took the lead at the start and soon was a length ahead. At Derby street Cleaver caught up, but Wilson again took his boat away and lengthened out to win by a length of clear water.

The semi-final race on Saturday was also decided in Wilson's favour when he met A. V. Hay. str., Tom Williams, R. H. Matthews,' and P. Barry. Hay got away at the start and led by a quarter of a length over three-gj.iarters of the distance. In the final sprint Wilson won by the narrow margin of 3ft. The second race on Saturday was won by G. Hall. str.. J. Zachariah, G. Montgomery, and A. Robinson from L. Cowan, str., R. Qoleman, J. Egan, and R, Harries. Hall hit up a fast, stroke at the start and took an early lead. His advantage of half a length was extended to a length at Morrison's bend. Cowan made up some of the lost ground at the footbridge, but Hall went on to win by half a length. The final between Wilson and Hall was decided over the week-end. Wilson went into the lead,at the start and held an advantage of three-i|iiarters of a length at the footbridge. The boats evened up at Morrison's bend and Hall passed Wilson at the Derby street bridge. A mishap in'Hall's boat, however, caused him to lose ground and Wilson went on to win by two lengths.
