AUSTRALIAN FRUITS

NEW ZEALAND EMBARGO HOPE FOR REMOVAL Mr 1-:. K. (lei-rod, secretary of the Fruitgrowers' Federation of New South Wales, writes lo the Sydney Morning Herald as follows : The indication given in your columns on .'January 3 of the hopes held by the Federal authorities of reaching settlement, in regard to the vexed position caused. by the. New Zealand embargo, which lias existed for the pasi three years, provides a pleasant prospect for the new year lo the growers oi this Stale, It is to be hoped that, the Government, will not, entirely lose sight of the claims of other fmits'as well as oranges, ami that, in addition, the claims of the growers of.this Mate will not also be overlooked. If i\\(. L embargo conditions are relaxed to the extent suggested, and that fresh fruits will be allowed admittance into New Zealand in exchange for a quantity of other produce, the growers of this State can hope 'for some relief of the position, but only if this State received the right to export, to New Zealand.

The hulk of the production of citrus conies from Mew South Wales, which is the only Slide having the Late Valencia variety substantially planted. Because of the very limited production of Late Yalencias in the southern States, full opportunity could not possible be taken to develop the New Zealand markets from the southern States alone. Tint is .also true in respect to mandarins, and there is a distinct element of danger in considering lhe position from a. Federal point of view. The production of citrus in the Commonwealth as a whole is already in excess of requirements, and if the southern States alone receive the right to export to New Zealand, they will lie encouraged to plant out additional areas of the varieties referred to for the purpose of supplying the New Zealand market, which must ultimately result in the creation of further problems.

If can be said with reasonable certainty'that practically the whole of the potatoes that, may come from New Zealand will have to be. accepted by the Sydney and Brisbane markets, and in turn the New South Wales and Queensland growers should have every opportunity of reopening their export market to the Dominion.
