HEAVY RAIN

GENERAL IN DISTRICT CAPE ROAD BLOCKED The heavy rain winch fell in Gisborne last night is general throughout the district. The Gisborne rainfall up to 9 a.m. to-day, covering the previous 24 hours, was 62 points, 52 points of which fell after 4 p.m. yesterday. The rain gradually increased in intensity as the night wore on, and by 9 a.m. to-day was descending in a steady deluge. On the Coast much the same conditions prevailed, and the Fast Coast Motor Service reports that, streams were rising this morning, threatening trouble if the rain continued for any length of time without cessation. Steady rain was reported from Te Karaka, where 73 points fell during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day. At a. late hour this morning, there was no suggestion of the river rising. Advice from the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. D. M. McGregor, states that the Gisborne-Opotiki, vra Cape Runaway, main highway is definitely impassable. The rivers are up and the clay section of the route is in a bad state. Until' the early hours of the morning little rain had' fallen on the Opotiki vside of the watershed.
