(Herald Correspondent.) The opening of a temporary dance ball in Wairoa, dubbed "The. Duck Inn," on Monday night- was a great- success, the attendance being large, but as the- floor .pace was more than generous, there was .10 over-crowding. Items were rendered by Miss Polly Winiata and by Messrs. Benson and ,McCorkindalo, whilst the music was acceptably rendered by Miss Adsett's orchestra. Mr. ii, U Cullen, M.P. for the Hawke's Bay electorate, and formerly a successful pioneer of the pig-breeding industry at Tahaenui, near N'uhaka, has consented to judge the pig classes al the Wairoa, Show. The selection of Mr. Cullen should prove eminently satisfactory to exhibitors.

Pending lurther decisions in regard to carnival week arrangements, it- may be said l that very good nominations have been received for the electric light sports meeting to be held in Lambtou Square. A number of wrestling bouts have been arranged, the principal one being Jack Boag, Wairoa, against a leading 'Gisborne wrestler.

A very enjoyable garden party was held last Saturday in the well laid out grounds of Mrs. W. Berry's home, at Hiiakituri. The organisers were Mesdaines Berry, Tra fiord, and S. Spenee, and the function was designed to help the' l funds of the lluakituri Women's Institute. Games of all kinds were played on the lawns and the prizes were awarded as follows :—The winners of most points for games and l competitions, clock golf, tenequoit, ping-pong treasure hunt and the smelling competition were Mis.s Spenee, with Miss Hi. Burn as the runner-up for the ladies, and Mr. 35. Y. Hutchinson with Mr. W. Richardson as runner-up for the men. for first and second places respectively. A table- decorated with prizes was-despoiled of its contents by those who succeeded in "removing Aunt Sally's teeth" by shying. Mrs. A. Moriee and Mr. B. G. Hayden annexed the nail driving prizes, and the fat turkey fell to .Mr. C. Shields, whilst Mr. A. Wester estimated the weight, of a handsome cake. A soft drink stall and an ice cream kiosk proved' popular. One of the most interesting, functions was the reading of teacups- by Mrs. Cowan, Gisborne. A very successful function was brought to a close by cheers for the helpers and the hostesses for the day.

The Misses X. and J. Nolan have returned to Wairoa after having spent a holiday with the- Misses Busby, Tokomaru Bay.—Miss B. Sainsbury, Wairoa., who has been visiting Miss M. Davies. Hastings, has returned home.—Miss Hodgson. Te Kiwi, and Miss Joan M. Deighton, Wairoa, have been selected to undergo training at Christchurch in preparation for taking up the profession of teaching.—Mrs. J. Svensen, of the Clyde Hotel, has returned from a motor tour of the North Island.— Mr. K. h. Cullen, M.P. for Hawke's Bay, who was visiting Tuai and Ardkeen early this week, cancelled his arrangements, and returned to Hastings.
