CHAMPIONSHIP CARNIVAL

GISBORNE SWIMMING CLUB TWO RECORDS BROKEN 50YDS. TITLE TO HOLMES. Two records were broken and some exciting finishes were fought mil a; the Gisborne Swimming filth's championship carnival held at the Macrae Municipal Bath last -evening. 'lho records broken were in the oOycls. intermediate boys’ championship and in the 50yds. ladies' championship. S. Dodgshun clipped a second off D. Bowie’s record of 28sec., registered in 1054, and Miss 11. McKnight lowered Miss C. McKnight's 1934 record ot ;>;! 3-osec. by 1 2-ssee. The handicanping in the open section of the earni val was®of a high standtird and produced many close finishes. Conditions were favorable and there was a large attendance at the bath for the first carnival of the season. Five championships were decided. In two of the events, the final points were gained for cups, Miss .7. Garland winning the Gordon Gup and R. Clay the Lockie Cup. Record entries were received for the carnival, the fid 2 svds. open race drawing 17 starters and the relays were also popular. It was announced during the evening that another carnival would be held on Monday evening when the Heretaunga Swimming Club members would be on a visit to contest tiie cup donated by Mr. Charles Ferguson. This cup is competed for annually between the two clubs, alternately a! Hastings and Gisborne. Twelve of the Hastings swimmers and divers will be making the trip. The final event on the programme was a water polo match between the Possibles and Probables. From the two will be picked a representative team to meet the Heretaunga visitors and also to compete at the Hawke’s Bay championships to be held next month.
