TRAGIC ENDING AT MIDNIGHT

EMPIRE MOURNS PASSING OF LOVED MONARCH i(llec. January 21, I p.m.) LONDON, .January 21. The end to the brief illness of His Majesty King George V came shortly after midnight, a proclamation issued from Sandringham House conveying the tragic, but not unexpected news to the waiting crowds. Following yesterday morning’s announcement that the King’s condition was showing diminishing strength, and the even more disquieting one at 9.30 o’clock last evening stating that Mis Majesty’s life was moving peacefully towards its close, the station had been prepared for the news. Throughout the evening the crowd continued to gather outside the famous building in which lay the dying monarch, and the final announcement was received by a Vast concourse in a hushed atmosphere. Sandringham House was hushed into silence when the fateful bulletin was issued. The Queen and her sons and the Princess Royal had dined later than usual as they were expecting a report from the doctors, who were assembled in a room near the King’s bedchamber to await the end, which they realised was not far distant. The Princess Royal comforted her sorrowing mother and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the King’s old friend, murmured words of consolation. Everyone was anxious that the Queen, who bore the strain iof the past few days with unwavering fortitude, should rest as much as possible, so that the strain should not be overmuch for her health.
