(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.)

(Reed: Jan. 21, 11.40 a.m.)

LONDON, Jan. 20.

It was arranged yesterday, with the King’s cognisance, that a Privy Council would be held at Sandringham.House in a chamber adjacent to the sickroom, from which the King could conduct it. It was understood that the meeting was not an indication of any grave change in the King’s condition, hot that his illness might be prolonged.

The Council, which includes the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, and Lord Hailsham, was to deal with formalities requiring the King's signature.

A largo number of villagers assembled to watch the arrival of the Privy Councillors. Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, looking very serious, carried a large dispatch box. Sir John Simon was particularly stern.

The Privy Councillors assembled in a sitting-room adjoining the King’s bedroom with the doors wide to enable the meeting to be held in the presence of His Majesty in accordance with the constitutional practice. The King was propped up on pillows. Lord Dawson of Penn, who was present as a privy councillor, assumed the responsibility for seeing that the Kingi was comfortable and was not subjected to undue strain.

After the usual formalities Lord Dawson presented the King with a State paper constituting the Council of State. His Majesty signed it, after which the Privy Councillors and Sir Maurice Hankey lunched with the Queen. Doctors who visited the Duke of Gloucester- stated it was inadvisable for him to travel to Sandringham unless such- was absolutely necessary.

According to an official announcement His Majesty has appointed as Councillors of State, the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York, the Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.

The Privy Council consisted of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Hailsham, Mr, Ramsay MacDonald, Lord Dawson of Penn, Sir Clive Wigram, Sir John Simon, Sir George Clerk, and Sir Maurice Hankev. ■

Sir Maurice Hankey told the press that His Majesty affixed; his usual signalure, after which the councillors withdrew to allow him to rest.
