CHURCH DESTROYED
FIRE IN CANTERBURY Damage estimated at £ICOO was caused by a fire in the Church of the Holy Angels, Darfield, late on Saturday night. The church, which was more than 50 years old, was completely destroyed, in spite of the efforts of volunteer firefighters.
Father M. J. MeMonagle, the priest in charge, said that everything was in order when he visited the church at about 8.30 p.m. About an hour later he saw the church in flames. The fire quickly gained a strong hold on the dry timber. He summoned the assistance of people who had -been at the Darfield picture show, but the church was soon destroyed, and with it valuable vestments, furnishings and statues.
