Tin* s(*i|!it'l In I In* discovery ot a portable transmitting set on a man at lio.seiiill racecourse on April 7. 1935, was the conviction in the Police Court of Rufus Theodore Naylor, aged 52 years, investin'; Charles Rowles. aged 26, radio medianir : Bertie Slleeley. aged 47, clerk : and Walter Bedford, aged 25, mechanic. The eases had been adjourned pending a recent High Court judgment on t hi* validity of tin* Wireless Telegraph Act.
Bedford was lined £5 with £7 15s costs for having, without authorisation, used an appliance for transmitting messages by wireless. Naylor. Bowles, and Slleeley were charged with having been concerned in Bedford's offence. Naylor was fined £5 and Shecley and Howies £2 each. All three, were ordered to pay £2 IQs court costs.
To a .similar charge. Itric Cordon, 32, pleaded not guilty and was remanded. Tin* prosecution stated that Bedford, who had a transmitting set. strapped to his hody. sent informal ion from the racecourse In a spot outside, where there was a receiving set and a broadcasting

Coimsel for tin: defence stated the defendants had good grounds for believing that they were acting within their rights, but. after the High Court’s decision. they had come to court at the earliest possible opportunity to plead piilt.v.
