MR. BRUCE'S STORY

ENTRY INTO POLITICS "A SHEER ACCIDENT" LONDON, Nov. 18. The Australian High Commissioner, Mr. S. l£. Bruce, amid loud laughter, disclosed to guests at the stage golfing dinner the real reason for his becoming a Prime Minister of Australia. "Even my becoming a politician was a sheer accident," he said. "It was the last thing I wanted to be. Of course, a High Commissioner is much more respectable. 1 stood compulsorily, and I was not even certain for what Parliament. It took me half an hour to answer one question about wheat prices, which I had learned by heart. Once I was speaking in a market square where I had not time to answer a question, so in desperation I told a story about an Irishman, who told an Englishman that he expected £5 for a bullock he was driving to market. 'Take it to Liverpool,' said the Englishman, 'and you'll get £ls.' 'Yes,' retorted the Irishman, 'and* if Oi take the Lakes of Killarney to hell Oi'll get my own price for thim.' "That story," concluded Mr. Bruce, "got me elected and eventually made me Prime Minister."
