A Versatile Boy Actor
COME years ago a gramophone company iiv England held a nationwide competition, and, lo the amazement of the 500 competitors, the winner was .Jimmie Hanley, then an eight-vear-old singer of amusing songs. This was the beginning of young .Jimmie’s career, far his parents, convinced that the child had a gift which should, he developed, sent liiin to study with Italia. Conti, Hie famous teacher of dramatic art in Eon don. , After (appearing in amateur shows and at charity concerts, .Jimmie made his professional debut as “.John” in “Peter Pan.” Then came a part in “White JT'orse lnn”,whicli attracted the attention of filmfolk. A small
part in the picture, “Red Wagon,” was then followed by a chance to play in “Little Friend,” where Jimmie was the errand 'boy adorer of Nova Pilbeam, horself only a child of ,14. Gisborne’s last glimpse of Jimmie was in “Brown on Resolution,” but, as lie is engaged on a long contract, he will be smiling out from many more feet of celluloid in the near future. Jimmie is now 16, and happily, success has ont distorted 'his youthful outlook in the least. At liis home in Sutton, Surrey, lie gives full rein to his
hobbies and sports in his back garden and his den. A peep into this wooden shack behind the marrow beds discloses
the innards of a motor “bike” strewn over 'his work bench; a disembowelled wirolcs set roosts on the shelves; clever pen and ink sketches adoirn the walls; and a model theatre is a monument to his histrionic flair. He is a typical British boy, level-headed and enthusiastic about life in general.
