GISBORNE ASSOCIATION MANAWATU VISITORS OXLEY-McKAY BOUT OFF At the Gisborne Boxing Association ’s tournament to-morrow night the public are assured of bright bouts. There will be six special -contests in which representative boxers of Poverty Bay will be matched against members of a visiting party from the Afanawntu association, Those who saw. Heeriey, Callaghan,' and Shaskey fighting at the recent championship tournament and know their form will realise that the trend of the bouts will be of a high order when these boys meet' good outside talent. L. Turnbull, who was not seen in action at that tournament, has not had many opportunities, but has put up the creditable performance of having won all the contests in which he has taken part. The main bout, of the evening was to 1 have been'between Johnny McKay,Gisborne, and Ted,Oxley, Pahiatua. A 10-round contest-with these two men Would have been excellent fare, but advice was received by the Gisborne association late yesterday, afternoon that Oxley had received an injury to his left arm and the bout- was put off. This conclusion was arrived at by the committee, which thought that it was advisable to cancel the bout rather than run any risks. Strenuous efforts are being made by the association to arrange a substitute opponent, for McKay, but: if this is not possible, in the short time remaining, to-morrow’s tournament will be gone on with and the programme will be lengthened by including more Of the promising amateurs.
