A very jolly evening was spent in ■alining, the music being provided by »lr Less’ orchestra. During interval: tongs wore given by Mr H. Allan am .t deli ghtful duet by Mrs Cook and -Mi Allan!. Extras were played by Mrs Allai aid Mr K. Morris.

Supper was taken on the stage am after justice had been done to the goex things provided. Mr T. Earnshaw, win acted as M.G. in his usual effective man uei', called on representatives of variou u-gauisations with which Mr (took haci dentified himself.

The list, of speakers is sufficient, it itself to show how heartily Mr and Mi--I'ook had entered into the social lif. >f the community. The speakers were as ‘ollows: For the School committee lr Q. Mills; boxing association, Mr R. itepheiison; sports clubs, Mr B. McCauov; gun club. Mr T. M. Askew; goli lull, Mr F. Hobbs; Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr J. G. Appleton; foothall club, Mi- T. L. Earnshaw.

Mr J. G. Appleton then asked Mi mil Mis Cook to accept a. pair of rugr from the residents of the district am i bridge set ami ease containing a foimain pen and pencil from his comrades • f the R.S.A.. bv whom especially Mr Cook’s departure will bo felt owing t< the great amount of work he lias dour in administering the association’s relict •kinds and .as its president for some ■.■ ears. Cheers were given for the guest* with musical honors.

Mr Cook, replying for himself and Mrs Cook, said that the six years spent in To Karakn had been strenuous ones but were full of happy memories and they would always look back to their vith great happiness, especially his connection with the- R.S.A.

Dancing was then resumed and tin ivening closed with the singing of “‘Atild Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. MR. STANLEY HOLMES POPULAR RIFLEMAN Members of the Gisborne Defence title Club, under the able chairmanship if the president, Mr. Ralph Bull, tend;red an enjoyable, farewell dinner on iatui'day to Mr. Stanley Holmes, master ,f the Kait.aratahi School, who has been ippointod to the Wangnehu School, vVangaiiui. The function was held at the VVae-roriga-a-hiku Hotel as a compliment, to the now proprietor. Air. James T’irie. an x-presideiit. of the club. Toasts to Hie good health and prosperity of file guest of honor were honored, and many good wishes extended, for Mr. Holmes is very popular with his comrade riflemen, and it was with deep regret that they learned of his impending severance from the club. Mr. Holmes as a teacher has also earned the regard of parents and children. who together with his many friends throughout the Poverty Bay district will regrcl his departure from their midst, and join in wishing him every success in his new sphere. Mr. Holmes left early tills week to take up his new duties.
