Poverty Huy women's hockey representatives lost- the Lady Carrol'l Shield to Wairoa. on Saturday as a result of a. late effort on the part of the challengers. I’overly Hay scored within a minute after resuming for Hie second spell, and held the one-coal lead oidd three miunlos from the rinse, v.'lien (ii• ■ visitors rattled on two goals, the final score, being two to one in AVairoa'a favor. AVairoa s win was the reward of persistency. Poverty Hay had slightly the hotter of play throughout, but relaxed their efforts towards the close, relying on the one-goal lead to retain them the. trophy. Wairoa, on the other hand, kept battling hard right to the close, and redoubled their efforts during the linal stages. Wairoa- is the fourth sub-association to win the trophy. It was originally donated to Poverty Bay, the local side losing to I’uahine, who held it against, all comers' until Xapier won it lasi year, Poverty Bay winning it. from Napier a few weeks later. Saturday’s game* was the first, challenge Poverty Bay had to contend with since bringing the trophy back to Gisborne. SCO 11EL ESE FIRST HALF The teams were:—

"Wairoa.—Mrs. .Single, .Misses A ratlin, Baku, F. Toliara, Single, .MeKav, Mcsdames Mclntosh, Gemmed. Miss Hook, Mrs. .Douglas, Miss Walker. Poverty Bay.— Mesdames Horsfall and Tuhoe, Miss Alien. Mrs. Hum, "Misses Brown, Tuhoe. Te Ola, R. Burn Purler, .Mesdames Matene and. Edwards. l’lay was fast and even. Waii'ou ppened- up with a slight, advantage, the forwards rushing play into the circle, and .Mrs. Tuhoe, Poverty Bay full back! had to reach high above her head to bring down a shot which must have beaten the goalkeeper. The home forward line began to combine well, bur was pulled up for being offside several times. Miss Rum, inside right, opened up some promising movements, and was well supported by Airs. AValene. inside left, but. .Miss Aranui, AVairoa full-back, proved an effective stumbling block for Poverty Bay’s movements down the left side. Airs. Single. Wairoa goalie, stopped several shots nicely. Poverty Bay had the better of play for a while, until AVairoa attacked down the light, wing. Airs. Mclntosh am; Mrs. Gemmed 'co-operating well. Shortly after (lie ball was sent across tlie circle edge, but hesitation • spoiled All's. Douglas’ shot. Half-time arrived with Poverty Bay oil (lie attack and with (he score sheet, unopened.

HOME SIDE IN LEAD The visitors played good hockey, !lm main feature being a. sound defence. Airs. Single, the goalkeeper, was efficient, and stopped many shots. Miss P. Aranui was t-lio better of the fullbacks, her tactics frequently breaking up the Poverty Bay attacks. Miss Single, at centre, and Aliss Toliara, on the right, were the best, of a strong half-line, while Mesdames Mclntosh and Gemmell were the strength of the forwards. The form of some of the Poverty Bay players was disappointing. Airs. Horsfall did not. have enough lo do in goal to really test her because Airs. Tulioe was such a tower of strength in Hie backs. Aliss Allen did not reproduce last year's form, and her intercepting was weak. The half-line did not rise iu the occasion, but the forwards weid well, except that they did not. make best use of" all their opportunities. Aliss Rum, at inside light-, was the pick of the line, her main fault being obstruction ; she combined well wil-h Aliss Te Ota. on t-lio right wing. The first goal came immediately after the resumption. Poverty Bay attacked down the right wing, AJisses To Ota and Rum working effectively. Aliss Te Ola sent in a good centre into the goal mouth, and although Airs. Single, the. goalie, stopped the ball, Aliss Bum followed in fast and tapped the ball into tbo net. GREAT FINAL EFFORT

Poverty Buy attacked down the left boon after, Mrs. Pd wards centring neatly, but Miss McKay saved bv hitting behind. Mrs. Single saved another shot from Miss Bum a. little later, and Poverty Bay continued to attack when a. heavy shower swept the field.

Wairoa then took a turn at. the attack, Mrs. Gemmell and Miss Hook sending in some hot shots, one going over tile crossbar. Wairoa then attacked down tile left wing, and Miss Walker beat Miss Allen and Mrs. Tulioe, the latter, however, recovering to send behind. The next Wairoa attack went clown the right, and Mrs. Mclntosh sent in a. long centre to Mrs. Oemnicll, who smacked in a high shot from the circle edge, the.g'oalio having no chance. This equalising goal came about three minutes from the finish. A minute later Miss Tohara. set the Wairoa forwards moving with a hit, to Mrs. Mclntosh, who sent across a long centre to the goal mouth.
