MR. AND MRS. G. PURVIS

SCOTT IS II FUNCTION People iloeked from far and near to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. CL Purvis on Saturday at a presentation and social evening in the Grange Hall, arranged by the Gisborne Scottish Society. The gathering was presided over by Dr. Tv. M. Gunn, who, on behalf of members of the Scottish Society and the National Dancing Association, presented Mr. Purvis with a fountain pen and propelling pencil. In making the presentation, Dr. Gunn referred to Mr. Purvis’ seven years service as piper to the society and while congratulating him on his promition said that what would be Gisborne’s loss would be New Plymouth’s gain. Oil behalf of the society, lie also presented Mrs. Purvis with a china coffee set. A number of children in Highland costume formed a circle around Mr. Purvis when Mr. P. Sim, on behalf of the children, presented him with a pocket wallet and Mrs. Purvis with a hearth rug. Mr. Purvis suitably responded. At intervals during the evening, tho children danced a massed Highland Reel, a Highland Fling, Reel o' Tullocli, and a double sword dance. Mr. Purvis played the accompaniments on the pipes. The latter part of the evening was spent- in Scottish. old-time, and modern dancing, tiie M.C.s. being Messrs. R. R. Watt, and C. C. Aitkcn, while Mrs. Aitken’s orchestra provided the dance music. A Monte Oarlo contest was won by Mr. .T. Bolger and Mrs. Milliehip and a spot dance by Mr. G. Grant and Mrs. limes. A dainty hand-round supper was served at a suitable interval and a very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.
