TALK OF THE TURF

P.B. TURF CLUB STEEPLECHASE MEETING SATURDAY’S LATE RACES TRACK,MAN SCORES AO AIN 'l'lu; Poverty Lav Turf Club’s steeplechase meeting of 1935 concluded on Saturday ivitli a hotlyconlesled Farewell Handicap, won l<y Trackman by half a length from Marching Song, ami with [fothwell just a node away, third. Collision, a well hacked favorite, touud the weight too much for the mile journey, and though pro minoaf in the running, was unable to do ’better than fourth at the finish. The, race was one of the Best, if not the- best, of the meeting. The winner was cleverly handled, and as on the occasion of his earlier win, in the Trial Handicap, was fortunate to get a run on the rails at the bend. He is evidently a horse worth riding a patient race on, for in all three of his starts at the mooting he showed plenty of pace in the straight, and lie was effective at six furlongs on Saturday as ia the mile. On Thursday Trackman was second in the Publicans’ Purse Handicap, so that his owner, Mr 0. L. Burns, who trains the gelding himself at Hastings, must be, able to look on his visit to the Turf Club’s meeting with satisfaction. NOT MANY SURPRISES

The form of Thursday worked out well on Saturday, and. though favorites were not generally successful, they were usually in the money, and there wore not many surprises. Gasman was not allowed to go out as slenderly backed as on Thursday, and liis winning dividend was much shorter, Capella Abbey paid the best dividend of the day in the Steeplechase race, in which the fall of Puccini and Kahunoke facilitated the Quin Abbey gelding’s win. As on the first day of the meeting, there was a small increase in the totalisator turnover, as compared with the corresponding day of the 1933 meeting, the investments for the day being £41(57 10s, as against, £4143 10s in 1033. The grand tot.al of investments for the meeting was £7345 10s, an increase of £7O on that of 1033. The increase was small, but nevertheless atisfactory to tho club, especially in view of the fact that after the fourth

ace on Saturday tho figures for the day were down over £30(1. The. last three races were good betting events, and pulled up the figures very substantially, tho statistics following (he same course as on the first day. JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS’ SUCCESSES

With two winners on the day, J. Walsh was tho most successful of the jockeys engaged ou Saturday, and E. Goldfinch, W. Broughton, *J. Leach, F. E. Baker, and P. Atkins each rode one winner. IT. Goldfinch, with a total of three winning rides for the mooting, had tho best two days, while J. Walsh, J. Leach, and P. Atkins each rode two winners.

The double scored by Trackman on Saturday gavo his owner-trainer, Mr. G. L. Burns, Hastings, the best run among the trainers represented on Saturday, while 11. Martin, W. Goseomb, J. W. Price, P. J. Wormnld. and T. J. Tinsley each had one winner ou the, day. As on Thursday, local trainers won tho majority of the races, all but Mr. Burns being resident, in Poverty Bay. I. Tinsley had tho best record for tho meeting with three winners, and G. L. Burns, W. Goscornb, and J. W. Price each had two winners at tho meeting.

ORGANISATION WORKED SMOOTHLY On Saturday the club's organisation worked as smoothly as on the first day <?f the meeting, the course and administrative officials giving every satisfaction. Tho judge, Mr. F. Tolcrton, was called on for some quick work in tho majority of the races, and his promptitudo in posting results was much appreciated. Air. R. H. Skipwith handled the fields at the barrier with his usual good results, and no owner could complain that his liorso was not given an even chance in tho jump-out of any race. The work of the secretarial staff, under Mr. 11. E. Dodd, was again excellent, and in every respect the meeting was a good one from the public point of view. The programme of music supplied by the W.E.C.M.R. Band during the afternoon added much to the enjoyment of the outing for a great number of the racing patrons. Concluding results on Saturday were as under: — TURANGANUf PLATE, of £SO; .second horse, £7; third, £3. For horses that have never won a race exceeding £SO to the winner prior to time of starting; (i furlongs. 2 E. Fitzgerald’s b gi De Friend, 2yrs, Defoe—Jeanette, 8.3 {P. Atkins) ... 1 4 H. E. Strawlmdge’s 1> f Bonnie Song, 3yrs, 8.9 (11. Goldfinch) ... 2 1 Abbot Bros.’ b g Kilberis, 4yrs. 9.0 (Tremain) 3

Also stalled: 6 Lucina, 8.11 (J. Sheehan); 3 Blue Needle, 8.9 (J. Walsh); 2 Small Boy, 8.3 (J. Leach); 5 Illinois, 8.0 (W. Broughton). There was one defection from the Turaiiganui Plate, this being Flying Mimic, seven being left to contest the event, including the bracketed pair, Do Friend and Small Boy. Bilberis, tho topweigiht, carried a. little more money than the bracket, while Blue Needle, third choice on the machine, was well below the bracket in point, of support. De Friend led from start, to finish. Blue Needle being second in the early stages, and Bonnie Song showing up veil after the first- furlong. The leader never gave anything else a chance, and though there were some changes of -post lion in the middle stages, among the slower starters, Bonnie Song was always well placed for second money, and stood off lhe fopweighl’s strong challenge in the. straight. Kilberis covered the last quarter-mile very fast, bill, started his run a bit late. Small Boy, Blue Needle, Illinois and Lucina finished in • that order, Lucina having been prominent,at one stage, lull, losing ground from the half-mile post, and tailing? the field home. De Friend won by two lengths from Bonnie. Song, and Kilberis was another length and a-lialf back, third. Time. 1.16 1-5. FAREWELL HACK HANDICAP, of £55; second horse, £10; third, £5; 1 mile. •t—G. 1,. Burns’ br g Trackman, 3yrs, Tractor —Queen's Maid, 7.13 (J. Walsh) 1 s—ll. LI. Making his first appearance at'homo after his successful southward trip, Collision was given first place on tho machine in the Farewell Handicap, which concluded the meeting. Quaint was also well hacked, in a good pool, on tlie strength of her win on Thursday, and Gigantic had s-ome good support.

No time was lost in getting ttie field away to a good start, and first to show out were Gigantic, Collision and Belbroney, the latter coming over from the outer with a great burst in tho first furlong, and settling down in the lead as they began to turn into the back stretch. Gigantic was next to tho loader, and Collision third, Kanapa, Trackman and Uothwoll being the nearest of the other runners in the field. Gigantic dropped hack in Hie stretch, and Kanapa went up to take second place, behind Belbroney, with Collision, Trackman and Bothwell running close up and the others hack a bit. Three furlongs from home. Trackman began to make his run. and Collision also improved, the first getting a run on the rails while Collision came around the leaders on tho outside. Trackman hit the front at the distance, and out of the hunch Marching Song and Botlnvell emerged to make determined efforts, the finish being a thrilling one with Trackman enjoying a slight advantage right to the judge's box. Marching Song carried on his run right: to the line, and missed first, place by half a length, while Botlnvell was a neck away third, and Collision a close fourth. After him came Quaint, Belbroney, Gigantic and Kanapa, well distanced by flic placed four. Time. 1.44 4-5.
