During Die speech of the GovernorGeneral at Umalni, Hawke’s Bay, on Thursday, there was an amusing interlude. which was thoroughly enjoyed by Maoris and pakehus alike. His Excellency’s speech was fully interpreted by I Jj»iv Apivunu. Ngula and at the end of each period of interpretation there were, bursts of applause. At one stage, how- j ever, His Excellency mentioned that.; while in New Zealand he would do-his utmost to prove a true friend of the Maori race, and this announcement was greeted with rounds of applause before tlm interpreter had 'a possible chance to explain wliat, the Governor-General hud said, a fact, which was marked by i laughter on all sides.
