TARRIF AGAINST CANADA
ACTION BY JAPAN TREATY BREACH ALLEGED OTTAWA, July 20. Mr.' If. B. Bennett, the Canadian Prime Minister, announced that an application by the Japanese Government of a ! 50 per cent surtax on certain Canadian imports, including lumber'and wheat, would bo considered a violation of the Anglo-Japanese treaty of 1911, to which Canada became a signatory in 1913. Canada will reply with a 33 J ad valorem surtax on Japanese goods. Further negotiations are in progress.
