GAME HOME SIDE LEADS EARLY the game for the junior Barry Cup was contested at a hot pace during tho early stages, a good Poverty Bay pa<£ being overshadowed by; a fast and forward division from Wairoa spending most of the first quarter in their own end of the field,. The Poverty Bay backs proved the decisive factor in the game, however, and before the game had been going about 20 minutes, three tries had been scored as the result of fast passing movements. None of the three tries were converted, but with a. lead of nine points to nil the homo team seemed only to need a continuance of its early form to ran out the winners by a comfortable margin. Tho game had not been going long when near tho mid-field line J. Boag (Poverty Bay) got possession of a rolling ball and slipped it out through Smiler to Haisman, who had doubled round to secure an overlap. The surprised Wairoa backs were caught out of position and were unable to stop Haisman before he grounded the ball beyond the goal line after a spectacular run. The ,try was unconverted.- - Poverty Bay 3," Wairoa nil. Wairoa played steadily for a time, •but though their forwards were always dangerous they could not. break down the Poverty Bay defence, the home side rallying when their forwards took charge with 'a fine dribbling rush, the Wairoa fullback being unable to get his kick away and the ball being scrummed out to Higgs, the PovertyBay halfback. From him it passed to Boag and Smiler, the latter scoring without difficulty. . Again there was no conversion.—Poverty Bay 6, Wairoa nil The last try of the first spoil was scored after 20 minutes play, when Henderson was given a run over in tho corner, showing a fine turn of speed, and getting round to a handy' position before grounding tho ball. The third chance of conversion, was missed, like the previous two. At half-time tire scoro was registered: Poverty Bay .9, Wairoa nil. At 3.40 p.m'., the score was still, nine to nil in favor of Poverty Bay.
