NEW BRIDGE OPENED
SPANNING MANAWATU . PRAISE FROM GOVERNOR (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON X., this day. After having .'served as an important highway link for nearly 60 years tinwooden bridge spanning the ivla'nawalu Rivet’‘at Fitzherbert avenue, one of the main approaches to the city from ihisouth, is to he’closed on Monday anil dismantled. It has hf-en replaced by a lerro-cou' Crete bridge embracing the latest fen- , ores of design and construction. The official opening ceremony was performed today by the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway. Pressing an electric button, Lord Galway broke a ribbon stretched across the bridge. He congratulated the designers on the structure, which would be a monument to the pursuance of a progressive policy. Such an imposing entrance to the city reflected tho civic pride and determination of Palmerston North.
Lord Galway was presented with n gold fountain pen from thu Fleteliei* Construction Company, Iho builders of Hie bridge. lie signed two parchment scrolls, one each for the City Council and the Kairaiiga County Council, as
Hie joint authorities. Addresses of welcome were given to the (jovernor,General by Mr, A. K. Hansford, the Mayor, Air. Coliis. chairman of the Kairanga County Council, and Mr. J. A. Nash. M.P.. and Mr. *1 A. Linklnter, M.P.
The bridge, has four bowstring arches and is of pleasing design. Later Lord Galway was entertained to lunch. 11c left in the -afternoon for Wellington.
