WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TK KARAKA MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) Owing, no doubt, to inclement weather, there was only a small attendance at the monthly meeting of the To Karaka Women’s Institute, held in the Waikohu Mali on Thursday, and presided over by Mrs 11. Allan.

After the singing of the institute song, much business was attended to. An invitation from the AYhatatutu Women’s Institute to an arts and ciafts day on August 17, had reluctantly to be declined owing to it coinciding with the next To Karaka institute meeting.

A notification received from the federation secretary was to the effect that the next half-yearly council meeting would be held at Ruatoria. After consideration of an appeal from the Crippled Children Society, it was decided that the Te Karaka institute would pay tin annual subscription. A petition for the protection of native birds was signed 'by the majority of members. A letter from the iiistitue link in Boh Accord, British Columbia, proved most interesting. In order to build up the sadly depleted institute library, each member was asked to bring a book to the next

mooting. A report rend by Mrs Stool on the roe cut card tournament showed that the function was ah outstanding .success, financially and socially, and it was announced that Miss V. Bull had won the parcel competition. A vote of thanks was accorded the organisers, Mrs Steel and Mrs Fisher.

Business finished, a very instructive and practical demonstration wsis given hv Miss If. Conk, Gisborne, on selfmeasuring, altering patterns to individual measurements, and the putting out of garments. A vote of thanks to the| demonstrator was passed. The roll call, “When .1 am happiest,” was in keeping with the day’s motto, “A merry heart docth good like a medicine,” and caused much merriment when it was responded to.

Competitions resulted as follow: — flaud-mnde handkerchief: Miss 15. Orr, 1; Mrs 'Bull, 2; Mrs Fisher, d. Butterscotch: Mrs Fisher, 1; Mrs. Bull, 2. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Chatteris and Malone, and Miss M. Steel.
