WAIROA A. AND P. SOCIETY

ANftUAL REPORT

YEAR'S ACTIVITY

IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED

The various improvements, effected during the year and the results of the 1934 dhow are detailed m the annual report of the Wairoa County A. and P. Society, the annual meeting of which is to be held on Thursday.. The report is as lotto ws:—

the society's annual Show was held on Wednesday, January 00, 1960, duruig carnival week, and was agaia a great success. The only sections tc show any material increase were the pig, school and dancing sections, .National dancing was again a great attraction for the public and the entries showed an increase of 72 on last year's total. Since the incept Ton of this section it lias proved a very popular one with the ptinlic and proves that it was a wise move on the part of the committee when it decided to include national dancing! in the schedule. "The entries totalled 2454, against 'iib2l last year—a decrease of 67—and it is very hard to account for the decrease. The Show was a fortnight later than previously and the season very dry, and no doubt both of these had a lot to do with the decrease, in entries. Although the number of entries Horn outside districts were not up to previous years, it was very pleasing to see quite a number come forward, it is hoped that next year will see an increase. "Receipts amounted to £923. against £9ll, and expenditure £992, compared with £B9l, leaving a debit balance of £69, as against a credit balance of £l9 7s 7d last year. The committee wishes to express its appreciation to breeders and exhibitors, both locally, from Hawke's Bay, Poverty Bay, and other districts, ancl sincerely trusts that the support given in the pasi well be again forthcoming at future Shows." A table of the number of entries in the various sections from 1923 to 1935 was also included in the. report. The entries for the respective vears were: 1928, 1193; 1929, 1404; 1930,. 1972; 1931, 1618; 1932, 1512; 1933, 1866; 1934, 2521; 1935, 2454.

membership and improve MENTS

"'Members' .subscriptions were £244 2s, against £236 10g 6d the previous year— ftn increase of £7 lis 6d. It is very gratifying to see. new members being enrolled, and your committee trusts that all members will endeavor, where possible, to bring along at least the name of one new member ami thus increase the membership, as this is the main source of revenue. Several junior members joined up during the year, and it is hoped that others will lake the advantage offered. "During "the year your oommitten called tenders for an addition to the produce shed, arid the successful tenderers were Messrs. Hedley and lledley. This was erected in time'for the Show, and proved its worth beyond doubt. Complimentary remarks were made- I>y exhibitors, judges, and (be general public, and, besides proving! its vahlo in the display of the entries in the homo industry section, provided ample -room for all sections under this heading to be in the one building. The cost, of this addition was to bo provided out of a stock drive, but unfortunately only £B4 has,

ps yet, been raised, and it is hoped thai all those canvassers who have, not canvassed the road allotted to them will do so at an' early date.

"[Jrgent,'improvements are required to be done to the sheep yards, etc., aim it will he the duty of the new committee to go into this matter very seriously and see what can be done to make the necessary improverheiYtsr Other small improvements were carried out during the year to the benefit of the society.

"From a perusal of the balance sheet and statement of Show account, it will oe "seen that the society made a loss of £69, and with tin;, exception of the entry fees other receipts were well maintained. The expenditure has been heavier this year, and the. items showing a substantial increase are prize- money and judges' expenses. "During the past year the society lias lost a number of members, some of whom have been supporters fur a long period.. To the relatives of the deceased members the. committee extends deepest. sympathy.
