MRS. M. RUTHERFORD

LORD RUTHERFORD'S MOTHER (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. The death (if Mrs. Mart,ha Ri.ilherford, mother of Lor.! l{,iiiher.ford of Nelson, occurred this evening, ngod 92 yours. Mrs. Kutherford, who lived lior life in the Tnrnnuki and Nelson provinces, was predeceased by her husband, Mr. James liutherford. Later he took the degree of Bachelor of Laws of Ediburgh University, afterwards in Edinburgh practising his profession as Writer to the Signet, an old law society of •Scotland, in 1597 he came to New 'Zealand for the benefit of: his health, and for some time lectured on economics at Victoria University College. Afterwards he took up farming, and lived in the Pahiatiin and Waitotnra districts. In 191.'-! he went to live at Havcloek North. A resident of Auckland since ISSOj Mrs, Frances Swindail, aged S2, widow of the late Air D. M. Swindail, of Birkenhead, has died., She arrived with ,-her parents in the steamer British Empire. The voyage, which extended over 89 days from London to Auckland, was a tragic one ns, when cuily 13 days out from England, an outbreak of measles occurred and raged for over 40 days. This had' no sooner been checked than scarlet fever br.oke out and in the course of the remaining 34 days of the voyage eight of the passengers^died.
