ROAD FUND “RAID”

PROTEST IN ENGLAND LONDON. .May 17, .1 strong protest against* the Chancellor's; proposal to take another £14,470,000 from the road fund has been sent to the Prime .Minister, .Mr. Chamberlain, apd the Minister of Transport in the form of a resolution passed by the committee of the Royal Automobile Club. They remind-the Government that the special motor taxation was originally instituted alter consultation with the dub solely for the construction and improvement of roads and bridges, and that this arrangement was approved by Parliament. The committee specially condemn the procedure under which the Treasury, by withholding and delaying grants for road works, “causes a misnamed 'surplus' to accumulate in the Treasury, which proves an irresistible temptation to needy Chancellors.” The road fund, it is suggested, should be under the sole control of the Transport Minister (or a solidary commission), subject only to Parliament.
