THIRD CRICKET TEST AFRICANS OUT FOR 171 M.C.C.’S GOOD SECOND 177 FOR THREE WICKETS ''Else. Tel. Copyripht—United Press Assn.) (Received July 16, 11 n.m.) LONDON, July 15. When stumps were drawn at the end of the second day oi the third test match, England appeared to be in a safe position, although the chances oi completing the match in the remaining day are doubtful. Good steady bowling by the homo aide, five bowlers sharing the wickets, resulted in the South Africans being dis missed for 171, giving England a first •linings loud of 45 runs. At stumps, England in the second innings had put on 177 for three wickets. The weather to-day was overcast, but the wicket was easy paced after the heavy roller had been used. When play was resumed, Siedle anil Rowan opened confidently against accurate bowling, and an hour’s play .added X 9 runs, when Siedle, having hesitated over a second run,; was yards out of the crease when the wicket Was broken.' With only two wickets down for 120 runs, the Africans seemed to he well on top, but the rapid fall of two more wickets changed the position entirely. Rowan continued to hue stoutly until Hammond brilliantly caught him at second slip. He had batted for 210 minutes, and his 62 included six lours. After this, the visitors collapsed, the remaining batsmen being dismissed in' quick succession, l.nsp alone providing a bright interlude by knocking up 13 runs In the last few overs. The innings lasted for 270 minutes. The English fielding throughout was keen and smart, and the bowlers, after the first hour or two, were clearly on top. The English hatting order was changed, Mitchell opening with Smith. The pair sent up 50 in 65 minutes, and then increased the scoring rate, the first wicket seeing a hundred runs on the board In order to check tho scoring' rate, Wade changed the bowling, ineffectively at first, hut before stumps were drawn. Smith, Mitchell, and Barber all fell victims to Vincent’s bowling. Hammond and Wyatt played out time, and when stumps were drawn had the. satisfaction of seeing the side in a good position.
