FARMS FOR EX-SERVICE-MEN REG EETFULT <Y DECLINED The offer made by Mr. F. W. Burley, of Hamilton, ot a gift of the Wavcriey Islands estate, near Eureka, comprising 2483 acres, to the Waiwato Returned Soldiers’ Association for settlement by ex-servicemen, lias been regretfully declined bv the association, owing to lack of the- funds which Ft would be. necessary to spend on the property at the outset. The value of the estate is given as £12,500, but it is estimated that A would cost £40,000 in addition, to carry out the scheme of settlement suggested by the donor. . The e-xecutive of the association obtained a report, which in cheated that n good deal of money won't? Tie. required to be spent on roading, fencing, buildings, and general farm equipment, before the property could he made available to men of little capital. Mr. Burley had previously exhibited his friendliness toward the Keturncd Soldiers’ Association by offering to contribute £IOO per annum towards its Poppy Day funds. A cheque tor £2OO, representing two years’ payment in advance, has just been received by the association from Mr. Burley.
