OFF .;V: : ’ " ] • Recent trends in the motion picture industry were described by Mr. John J*-; 'Kennebeck, managing director for the- Paramount Film Service in AusNew Zealand and tho Far East, in' an ■ interview at Auckland. >• One- of . the most important changes referred to was that from black and white films to those' presented in sharp, patural colors, free from blur and reproducing all the beauty and harmony of the .large stage setting. '! Television was a long way off as applied to the cinema, Mr. Kennebeck stated, and ho thought it would be a number of years betore it affected the industry in any way. On tho other hand, third dimensional pictures were beginning to make their appearance, though confined at present to color cartoons. Another important innovation was the bringing of opera to the screen. This was purely a trial to test the.public taste and if the films did not prove popular they would not be persevered with. ‘‘There has been a marked improvement in picture attendances botli in Canada and in the United States,” Mr. Kennebeck said. “Figures to-day are even higher than they were in the peak pexind in 1930. The reason for this is ‘somewhat obscure, but it is probably due. to the fact that money seems to be more widely circulated. Another probable cause may lie in the obvious improvement in the stories selected for filming, old gangster pictures and overdone love dramas being almost things of the past.” Reference was made by Mr, _ Keiuiebeck to the great success attained by the New Zealander, Colin Tapley, selected from 60 picked aspirants from the British Empire and United States. He was tho only one that had revealed outstanding talent and his contract had been extended by another three years. Apart from his film success, he was a popular figure on account of his charmfog personality, and apparently had a fine, future ahead of him.
