STRANDED IN NEW YORK
IiVKP .MEN FROM. N.Z. Questioned regarding tl«o two New Zealand members of the Byrd Antarctic expedition staled to lie stranded in New York, Mr. Id. A. liuekliu, Consul-Gen-al for I Ins United States, stated" at Wellington that lie had received no communication on the subject. lie expressed surprise, that they should have been allowed to sail with the expedition without. making some provision either for their return home or foV the stay in America 5 sailors, however, observed Mr. Uucklin, were notoriously improvident and content to live from day to day in a hand-to-mouth sort of manner. Incidents of a similar nature were of comparatively common occurrence. The Consul-General said that Admiral Byrd had taken, pains to see that the memlWs of his crew were properly provided with passports and necessary papers. In the event of their being ineligible for .entry' into the United States it. devolved on the management of the expedition to repatriate them. There was no slur or stigma 10 being confined to Ellis Island, which was simply an immigration station, wlnfrc prohibited immigrants could be kept until they were shipped back to the country whence they came.
