EIGHT MEN GASSED
FIRE ON STEAMER BLAZE AMONG COAL FUMES AFFECT FIGHTERS (Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received July 13, 2 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 13. Alarm was caused at Williamstown early this morning by a fir© in the coal bunkers of the steamer Erica. Eight men who were fighting the blaze were gassed by carbon monoxide fumes set up by the burning coal, but were hauled up and responded to medical treatment. When Captain T. Christie and the ship’s carpenter, .went below to try to cut through the Wooden bulkhead to reach the seat of the fire, they Collapsed, and had to bo dragged through a hatchway by ropes. The other gas victims were two of the ship’s firemen, the chief engineer, the third engineer, and two brigade i.mrten, who also sustained burns Explosions were caused by the ignition of pockets of gas from the burning coal. Tons of sea water wore pumped into the bunkers, to which the blalze was confined. The ship’s sailing for .Mauritius has been delayed.
