STRANDED MAHENO
NO HOPE OF SALVAGE FOUNDED BY SEAS BRISBANE, July 12. No attempt was made to-day to salvage the Malieno. The tug Oarlock reached the seeno this morning but was later discharged by the Japanese master ,of the Oonaii, who has charge of both vessels. A later message states that Captain Tanaka, master of the Malic-no, reported that there was no hope of saving her. The seas were again rough and it was impossible to estimate the full extent of the damage to the Malieno. It. is now reported that the Malieno has not broken her back, but it is believed that she is seriously damaged and that it will not be long before her back will be broken as a result of the heavy pounding of the seas. The Japanese paid £OOOO for lier.
