Big Mangel Crop
pOXHi DEL'ABLE interest has been auii infested in the setting of a new record for weight ,of root crops grown in Hawke’s" Bay by Mr J. H. Lloyd, of Mangatorctere, with a crop of mangels which weighed out at, the yield of 11’I tons blent, per acre, as officially recorded by Mr d. W. Palmer, instructor in agriculture in Hawke As Bay. The crop was a very even one, with a number of large roots. One mangel from the crop, placed on the scales some weeks ago. weighed 54111. •The variety of mangel used, Lord Warden, is n new variety to Hawke’.-,; Bay, leaving only been introduced this season. It is a giant orangeii globe, originally, raised* in the Iltjfmolhnd from- a single' roof-of rat her-trough appearance. "''Contihued re-selection over a lengthy period ,of years, nas resulted in the evolution of the present Virriety, which is 'claimed in the Homeland to be the heaviest cropping variety in cultivation. It is deep orange in colour, with a. medium top and neck, flesh of good quality and is claimed to have good keeping qualities. .■' y
