WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TOKOMARU BIRTHDAY PARTY The July meeting of tin* Tokomaru Bay Women's Institute was held at. the carved Maori meeting house on Wednesday afternoon when lly 1 members celebrated their fourth birthday. There were 39 visitors present Irom the institutes of Tolaga Bay, Waipiro Bay and Huatoria, which made a gathering, ot 90 Women’s Institute members. The usual business was dealt with and Hue roll-call, “a birthday 1 remember,” was read, and well responded to. Delightful vocal solos were rendered by .Mrs. King, Tolaga Bay, “Slave Song” and "Columbine.” Unfortunately the members who were producing a one act play could not attend on account of illness. Mrs. S. Lee. a Waipiro member, gave a recitation "llie Sewing Circle,’ which was greatly appreciated. Mrs. J. 1.. Grant, the Tokornaru Bay president, recited "'Hie Little Quaker Maid.” The members then made paper bats, which were worn during the game ol musical parcel. The winner ol this game for the visitors was Mrs. S. Matthews, a Waipiro member, and for Tokomaru Bay Mrs. W. McCracken w:| s the lucky player. Mrs. Larsen, Waipiro. received n prize for the best paper hat. The competitions, which were well contested, were judged by the visiting members. Mcsdamos J. J. Anderson. Tempest and Reedy, and resulted as follow : —Collection of home-made sweets. —Miss M. Maekay, 1: Mrs. Kay. 2. Knitted hot-water bottle cover. Mrs. Powell. 1: Mrs. flibbert, 2. Bowl of violets. —Mrs. Newlands. 1 : Mrs. Grant, 2. Bowl of anv other flower. —Mrs. Snarks. 1; Mrs.'Boag. 2. Best exhibit of half-year’s work. —Miss Maekay. J ; Mrs. Sparks, 2. Everyone then joined u) community singing which was greatly enjoyed. A handsome biillahu cake, which was made and given bv Mr. and Mrs. ii. A. Findlay, wlm lately left Tokomaru Bay. occupied pride of place on a. special table. The cake had been ho.-ml il'tllly iced by the secretary, Mrs. .Maekay, and was ornamented with kewpies, which were sold as souvenirs. ’I ho cake was cut and distributed at afternoon tea. The tea hostesses were Mesdame? Bigncll, B. McKee, J. Roberts, ,T. Morale and F. Harris. “Auld Lang Svne” and the National Anthem terminated a very happy meeting. Fielder presided over a large, at tendance of .members and one visitor. The imceling opened with the institute snug. Apologies were received from Mosdames H. Montgomery, ,\V. Thomas and 11. Bulst. More, time Hum usual was lit ken over business and correspondence. An appeal was -made for clothing for children of the unemployed. A vote .of thanks, moved by Airs 11. If. The roll call, uses of vinegai, brought forth a good response. Sixpenny surprise .packets sold well. The i-ompetition, puff pastry, resulted in each of the competitors securing the same number of votes. fhe woolwinding was won by Mrs Fielder and Mrs Robb, and Airs Smith and Miss J. Murrav, equal. Mesdarnes A. Taylor and C. B. Pederson were hostesses, and after a pleasant interval for afternoon tea/ Mrs. C. V. Smith explained Singer-craft io those who had -missed the. previous demonstration, her rug showing how cheaply these mats can he produced. The singing of the National Anthem brought a happy meeting to it close.
