BUSINESS CONDITIONS

GRADUAL IMPROVEMENT LACK OF CONFIDENCE Reviewing conditions in February the Government Statistician states that the most significant'indication of a steady, although gradual improvement in internal business is the continuing decrease in unemployment. At February 16 the number of men a charge on the unemployment fund was 50,134, compared with 63,980 a year previously and 52,086 in January, 1935. “Unfortunately, there is still abundant evidence of a lack of confidence in business enterprise,” states the survey. “The level of fixed deposits in trading banks is still abnormally high, in spite of some recession from peak levels shown in the middle of last year. Mortgage registrations and land transfer business, although substantially higher than in. the depth of the slump period, are still far below normal.”
