COUNTRY RELIEF

LOWER RATES OP PAY FORCING DRIFT TO CITIES That the reemployment Board, by its policy of lower rates of pay for country relief workers, is forcing an urban drift, is still the opinion of members of the Palmerston North Hospital Hoard. A letter of protest was sent to the Minister asking that the rates be revised, and at a recent meeting of the Hospital Board a reply came to hand to the effect that the representations would be placed before the Unemployment Board. Mr A. E. Hansford said that a number of families had gone from Shannon and Longburn to Palmerston North and the demands on the relief depot were going up as a result. Mr V. E. Smith instanced families moving from Halcombe to Feilding. It was decided to forward information on the question to the executive of the Hospital Hoards' Association, which will take the matter up with the Minister.
