March 16—Kurow J.C. March 16—Clifden R.C. March 16, 18— Ohinemuri J.C. March 16, 18— Wellington R.C. March 20—Opotilci J.C. March 21, 23—Oamaru J.C. March 22, 23—Manawatu R.C. March 23, 26—Bay of Plenty J.C. March 30 —Birchwood H.C. 11, Turner, the highweiglit and hurdle hoiseinan who has had much to do with the making of jumpers in the last year or two at Riecarton, has been recommended for a trainer’s license. lie already has two horses, owned by Mr. A. S. Jones, to be prepared for jumping. They are High Speed and F'ion, a seven-year-old mare by Buff Gauntlet.

Star Artist showed that she was returning to form when she ran second to Scotland in the Jubilee Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Aroha recently. Her next appearance was in the Pukckohe Handicap, seven furlongs, at Pukekohe. and after waiting on the leaders to the turn she came through on the rails and won pulling up. * * * *

Synagogue is perhaps (he most aptlynamed racehorse in Australia, says a Melbourne writer. In addition to his being by Rabbi from Lady Ruth, he is closely related on the sire’s side of his pedigree to those good mares Rebekah and Rachel, the latter being Rabbi’s dam. • * * * Mata Hari is a fairly smart hack, who should be improved by the race he bad at Napier last Saturday. He assisted in making the running nearly all the way and then beat everything except Abbey Feale, to whom he was conceding weight. Abbey Feale was the best-oon-ditioned horse in the field and that helped her to victory. * # # # After a recent defeat at Caulfield, there was a disposition to regard Homer as unlikely to make a stayer, but his second last Saturday in the V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes', run over seven furlongs, will have brought him back to favor. Many New Zealanders would have been pleased had this Iliad colt won, but he went down to a colt who lias claims to being high class. * * * * W. Broughton failed to win a race on the second day of the Franklin-Bay of Islands combined meeting, and his total wins for the season are 57 as against 1.. J, Ellis, 58. Broughton will not have the forthcoming northern meetings to himself, as Ellis intends to travel to the North Island whenever opportunity offers. He will be riding at the Waikato meeting this week, his mounts including Star Artist, Du Barry, and Matorni. * * * * Two of the Chokebore team in Slasher, by Rapier from Brambletye, and Tail Light, by Day Comet from Owlscombe. both two-year-olds, have been attracting the attentions of track-watchers in recent tasks at headquarters.. The former is a leggy chestnut that has been in work for some time, hut a patient policy has been adopted with him. and lie b furnishing well under the treatment. Tail Light is also well grown, and lias also been given time. Tie is a brother to Owlsgleam, who impressed by her success at Motukarara. Both youngsters will probably be raced for the first time at Riecarton at Easter. * * * * Another English sire is on his way to New Zealand, the five-year-old horse Foxbridge haying been secured for Mr. L. S. Otway’s Trelawnev Stud, Cambridge. He is to arrive next month. A member of the No. 14 family. Foxbridge is by Foxlaw (by Son-in-law) from Bridgemount (by Bridge of Earn from Mountain Mint, by Spearmint from Adula, sister to Pretty Polly and halfsister to Veneration IT, dam of.Cragnnour). Cresta Run, by Hurry On from Bridgemount. won the One Thousand Guineas in 1927. As n three-year-old Foxbridge won the Atlantic Cup. ol 07500. 1| miles, at Liverpool, and ran third to Lonningdale and Firdaussi in the Eclipse Stakes, 1] miles.

Vintage has risen to fame too rapidly. Greatness iias practically been thrust Tinon him. Though he has won 'll races, all lie has gathered in is £2777. And now he lias to carry 9.7 in the Aiistrn- 1 linn Cup, says a Melbourne writer. Vintage began racing at the end ot Octol or. 1933. He struck form rapidly. Plans were made to take him to Australia last spring, hut in the autumn he went off and did not come up to his best again till it was too late to consider the trip. Instead, he remained at home, nicking up small stakes and earning more weight, whereas in Australia ho could have won more in one race than all he lias earned in the Dominion. * * * * In scoring a narrow win in the Northland Hack Handicap at I‘ukekoho, King Tut was opening his winning account, but lie does not appear to have raced prior to the present season and. was having only his fiftli or sixth start in all. The field he beat was not a good one and the form may not prove very useful as a later guide. King Tut is now six years old, and he is given as a chestnut gelding hv King Nassau, a son of Nassau and a half-brother to the Wellington Clip winner Kilmoon. His dam, Nowema, is a mare by Potoa tracing back to the famed Juliet, foundress of the most notable branch of the No. 13 family in New Zealand. He was bred by Mr! W. A. Mason, and lie is now owned by Mr. A. Forbes, from whom lie is held on lease by the Avondale trainer, W. Gough. Queen Nona, winner of the Horn bay Maiden and of the Pakaraka Hack Handicap at Pukekohe last week-end, made her reappearance a week earlier at To. Aroha after a spell since a single start in the spring, and it was evident in her showings there that she would require to improve only slightly to open her winning account before long. And so it proved, her double success at Franklin being meritoriously achieved. Queen Nona is a four-year-old bay mare by King Im from the F.lysian—Wenona mare Flnona, the dam also of Miss Ford (dam of King Ford), Wenday (dam of Cruel, and Gay Caballero, and she descends from the famed Steppe taproot. As a two and three-year-old she gained several minor places and was regarded as unlucky not to have opened her winning account before. Unsoundness has been her trouble, but she seems to have made a good recovery at last. She is held on lease from her breeder. Mr. R. Burke, by Mrs. L. M. B. Fllerington, of Paeroa, and she is now being prepared by Mrs. Fllerington.

1 The stable presided over by S. Barr at Riecarton lias had 11 wins this season, I ut it lias also had no fewer than 39 minor placings—2l seconds and 18 thirds, j Silver Sight (second) and Quietly and Capital (both third) increased this unlucky proportion at Motukarara last Saturday. * * * * The Riecarton owner-trainer, J. If. Prosser, suffered a severe loss at Riccartori. His two-year-old gelding by Robespierre from Haif a-Brace, dam of Double Shot, was given half pace work for a circuit, and when taken into his stall, fell to the ground. He rose again twice, hut after some further struggling expired. He was a most promising youngster. and his owner could have obtained a good price for him if he had shown any inclination to sell. Nearly two years ago Prosser lost another likely juvenile in Scarlet Robe, half-brother to Grand Review, who dropped dead when racing at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. ,** * * Record Flight, who lias only been racing over hurdles about three months, registered his first win in the Puni Hurdles at Pukekohe last Saturday, though he only got home by a head from Ruling King. He was one of the pace makers all 'the way. but his jumping was faulty at times. However, his pace on the flat stood to him. On Monday, in a similar event, his jumping was a good deal better, and he arid St. Ames set the pace throughout, the former outstaying him over the last bit. In his four starts over the battens he has never been further back than second, and as he is a good type of hurdler further improvement can bo expected.
