SHIELD ROWING

NAPIER RETAINS L.V.A. PAIRS TO POVERTY BAY KEEN RIVALRY AT CLIVE (Herald Special Reporter.) * NAPIER, this day. Winning the senior fours race and also the youth fours, the Napier Rowing Club retained the L.V.A. Shield at Saturday’s.regatta on the river at Clive. Tne Harris and Hill Shield, for pair-oat rowing, was captured, by the Poverty ■Hay Uowingi Club, witti a clear-cut majority of points scored. The keenest rivalry developed in connection with the two competitions, and the crowd of spectators was one of the largest yet seen at a regatta in the East Coast association’s district. ' ' Outstanding interest attached to the rowing of the senior lours race, iu whiCli Poverty Bay's crew was much fancied by the contingent from Gisborne. The Napier crew in this event was stroked ny W. Turner, holder of the New Zealand! amateur sculling title, and was ■‘jumping fit” to a man, full of determination to avenge their defeat last year at Poverty. Bay’s hands. On the senior race, hung the. fate of the shield, for Napier, Poverty Bay and 'Gisborne clubs all had points in hand, and the three points awarded for the senior win were bound to prove decisive. - • Getting off the mark with a great dash, the Napier crew left the issue in doubt for only a minute or two, as they took the lead and held it all the way over the course, to win by four lengths. The Poverty Bay crew finished second, •md Wairoa. third, well back, while the Gisborne entry was well out of the race. At an earlier stage of the programme, the L.V.A. Shield issue had lain between Poverty Pay and Gisborne Clubs, and on that occasion, too, the race went against the Poverty Bay crew. This was in connection' with tha. junior event, which was worth 21 points to the winners, and in which a victory would have meant an untouchable lead for Poverty Bay, which club had already aggregated four points in the competition. In a gruelling race, the Gisborne four proved superior by half a length, with Poverty Bay second, and the other two entries well back. Those who have followed the course of the regattas in recent years will remern her that in 1934 Poverty Bay had a good chance of bringing home the L.V.A. Shield from the Clive, having won the senior and junior events, and counting on the Gisborne crew to win the youth fours and so divide the balance of points that Napier could not pass the Poverty Bay aggregate. The Gisborne crew lost v a canvas in the youth race, and Napier beat Poverty Bay by half a (joint in the aggregate. This year it was the success of a Gisborne club crew that primarily lost Poverty Bay the chance of winning the shield. A win in the junior event would have meant a shield victory for Poverty Bay, regardless of the. outcome of the senior race.

In the pair-oar competition for the Harris and Hill Shield, there was almost as much interest shown as in the major series. Gisborne held the pair-oar trophy last year, but lost it on Saturday when Poverty Ray won a clear majority of the points awarded in this competition. Shield points were allotted as under:—
