Speaking to a large gathering of Taranaki dairymen at Stratford on Saturday to hear the views of various candidates seeking election to the Dairy Board, representing the middle ward, Mr. CG. 0. Dernier, Feilding, stated that “speaking with a full sense of responsibility. lie could inform the meeting that Mr. T. A. Winks, of Hawera, a member of the existing Control Board, would- be ono of the Government’s nominees for the new board, and the cheese section of the industry was therefore assured of representation on the new hoard, even if the representative of this section did not gain a seat at the election.” The remarks caused considerable comment in view of the Government's undertaking not to make nominations Until after the election.

Commenting on the position, the Taranaki Daily News editorially says-"A grave question of principle is involved if election campaigns are to be conducted on such a basis. Apart from the ouestion,s of parochialism, the leakage of information and other aspects, the incident demands a plain statement from the Prime Minister, whether Cabinet has departed from its original intention of postponing the selection of State representatives until after the election, and.

if so, why dairy companies were not advised, so that their candidatures may be revised if considered necessary.”

Mt\ Mervyn Wells, Cambridge, a candidate' for the northern ward,' is- in Ijisborne to-day. and commenting 6n the .above statement lie said that Mr. F. Lye, mehiber for the Waikato, '.was responsible for having an amendment made to the principal Act debarring the appointment to the board as a Government represen lative of any candidate who was defeat''' a.t; the election,
