OBITUARY

EX-KING OF lIEJAZ (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received Feb. 14, 2 p.m.) BAGDAD, Feb. 14. The death has occurred of ex-King Ali of Ilejaz, a brother of King Feisat. The now extinct Kingdom of Ilejaz was a product of the Great War, and ceased to exist on December 9, 1925. At an early stage of the hostilities, Ilusein Ali, then Grand Sherif of Mecca, received from Great Britain a guarantee of independence and autonomy of the Ilejaz in the. event of a successful rebellion against the Turks, and this was accomplished in June, 1916. Jn November of the same year Ali assumed the title of king, and was subsequently so recognised by Great Britain. Ali, however, aspired to greater position and assumed (he title of King of the Arabs, but, bis ambitions proved his undoing, and a renewal of Arabian differences and hostilities led to bis downhill.

MISS MARY C. GREER

There passed away to-day an old resident of Gisborne iii the person of Miss Mary Olieyne Greer, a well-known and highly qualified masseuse, and a woman of outstanding personality. The late Miss Greer bad great intel-lect-mil ability, and was of a. most loyal and warm-hearted nature. Her disposition endeared Her to a very large circle of friends in Poverty Bay, and it was characteristic of her that few- of her acquaintances know of her record of war service. Miss Greer volunteered for active service in 1915, and served at Walton-on-Tliames Hospital for New Zealand soldiers, and also at, Lady Barber’s V.A.D. hospital, Crawley Down, Sussex. In 1917-die returned lo New Zealand, where she had practised her profession ever since. The .deceased recently visited Australia,, and on her return her health broke down. Entering a private hospital, she failed fo rally, and her death occurred this morning. Miss Greer was the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Greer, of Melbourne; and a .niece of the late Mr. William Sievwright, of Gisborne. The funeral will take plate to-morrow, leaving her former residence in Temple street at 2.30 p.m. for Taruhern cemetery. .
