ABSENCE OF REPORTS SHIP MAY INVESTIGATE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGGTON, this day . In view of the absence of reports from outlying islands in the Cook group, following the recent hurricane, the Government is contemplating dispatching the steamer Matai on a visit of investigation. Since the hurricane, no communication h,as been received with certain islands, among them Palmerston Island. Despatch of the Matai will enable a round of calls to be made, and the hurricane damage fully .assessed. If she makes the trip, the Matai will carry provisions and a doctor, there being only one doctor available in the group.
