BOOKMAKING ALLEGED
ACTIVITIES IN HOTEL THREE PERSONS CHARGED (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The hearing of illegal betting charges arising from raids by the police on several hotels early in the afternoon of January 2(5, the day on which there was considerable racing activity throughout the Dominion, was commenced before Mr. H. W. Bundle, b..M., in the Police Court yesterday. The first charges taken were two against Mabel Quirk, wife of the licensee of Ht. Kilda Hotel, of using the kitchen of the hotel as a common gamin" house. Robert Peddnr Crawford, a barman, was charged on two counts with using the bar of tins hotel as a common gaming house, and' Maitin Quirk, the licensee, with using .ns premises as a common gaming house, and also permitting them to be used for such purpose. Evidence was given by Clara Eden, police matron, and Constable Gumming, with respect to several bets made with Mabel Quirk and with the barman, Crawford. After the evidence for the prosecution had concluded, the hearing adjourned sine d'ie.
