LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
PREPARATIONS IN HAND
EARLY ANNOUNCEMENT
Preparations are being taken in hand by the various local bodies of the district for the elections, which are to take place this year, and already a number of prominent citizens have been consulted regarding their intentions. Mayoral, Borough Council, County Council, Hospital Board, Harbor Board, and Power '" Board elections will all fall on the same date, on the second Wednesday in May, and as the date approaches, there is bound to be a, development of interest rather beyond the ordinary. The occurrence to the national elections later in the year also will increase interest in the local government polling. With regard to the Mayoralty, Mr. John Jackson, Gisbome's present Mayor, intimated this morning in reply to an inquiry that he proposes to seek reelection. The same inquiry was made of Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., who at the last Mayoral election lost the chief magistracy to Mr. Jackson in a threecornered fight; and drew from the district member a statement that he had not yet decided whether to seek nomination this year. Mr. Coleman added that he had been asked by many residents of the town to consider the matter, and
that he would give his decision later. In the event of his proposing to seeK. nomination, he would place himself in the hands of the Labor Representation Committee, as he had done in the past, and his actual nomination would depend on that body favoring his candidacy. Many other citizens of Gisborne are giving consideration to the matter o* nomination for the various fields of local body activities, but it is too early as yet to forecast whether the contests will draw big fields.
