TRAIN DERAILED
SLEEPER ACROSS LINE
SYDNEY, Jan. 2
Mischievous children residing in the vicinity of Darling harbor goods assembling yards caused a serious train accident last evening. Fortunately, nobody was injured. The youngsters placed a wooden sleeper across the rails in the path of an outward-bound western goods train, which struck the obstacle when travelling at a speed of 20 miles per hour. The locomotive and four leading trucks left the rails and ploughed into a steep embankment.
Several heavily-loaded wagons in the centre of the train telescoped and were [filed up 50ft. in the air. Miscellaneous goods and merchandise were scattered in all directions, causing damage estimated at thousands of pounds. The engineer escaped with a severe shaking, and shock.
The children watched the accident ancl then ran away.
