General Araki, in a new year's empire-wide broadcast, said : “We are now on the threshold of the crisis of 1955 which I foretold. I don’t see peace anywhere in a world which envies onr trade success. However, there is no reason for fear nor pessimism while a God is in heaven who helps the country which docs right. “Japan can still benefit from tfie West’s materialism, but the East is supreme spiritually, and Japan alone knows true civilisation. We are no longer pupils, but must he teachers, and Japan’s duty is to save the world.”
