NEW PEAKS CONQUERED
CLIMBING IN THE ALPS
LARGE PARTY’S SUCCESS
(Per Press Association., CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Extensive exploration work by the largest organised party of climbers ever to attempt serious tasks on the Southern Alps was undertaken during the holiday period. The weather conditions seriously handicapped the efforts. Nevertheless, several hitherto unclimbed peaks were conquered, the principal virgin ascents being Mount Loughnan and Mount Gorrie, while Mount d’Archiac was attacked from a pew angle and a successful climb accomplished.. The party comprised 36 members of the New Zealand Alpine Club, the organisation being in the hands of the Wellington section of the club. Members included two veteran pioneer alpinists, Mr. Guy Mannering and Mr. A. P. Harper. Other members were drawn from Auckland, Wellington, Napier, Dunedin and Christchurch. The party was based on the club’s new hut on Godley Glacier, 18 miles from Lily bank station
