DECKS AWASH
LAUNCH buffeted
CREW WITHOUT SLEEP
Seventy miles off their course, with all three compasses giving inaccurate bearings, the crew of the launch Bondi, bound front Hokianga to Grcymouth, decided, after two and a-half days’ battering, to run for Now Plymouth for a rest and to adjust the compasses. They arrived on Saturday. The launch left Hokianga last Wednesday, and from then until the arrival at New Plymouth the crew were without sleep. The decks were swept by 1 neavy seas, but no structural damage was done. When there was no land in sight on Friday morning a sight of the sun was taken, showing that the launch "was well off its course, and the crow decided to make for New Plymouth.
When the launch had put to sea it was found that the compasses were affected by the ironwork to such an extent that they could not be relied on for navigation purposes. They were then placed in the deckhouse well forward, and were not affected there, but the situation was not much improved, as they were out of sight of flic wheelhouse.
The launch is owned by the K.D.V. Box Company, and is used for towing: lumber at 'Grcymouth. The overall length is 50ft., the beam is 24ft. and, the launch is powered by Diesel en-j gines. _____
