December established fresh meteorological records for Wellington, being (lie hottest. December Wellington lias ever known. The mean temperature was 66.6. eight, degrees above I lie average. The highest temperature was 83.5 on Christmas Day.
It was the sunniest month ever recorded iu Wellington. The hours of bright, sunshine, totalled 313.7, which is an average of 10.1 per day. ’I lie previous sunniest month on record was January, 1928. when the total uns 312.5. On no day during the past- month did the ehn fail to shine for several hours. On December 13, 14 hours o! bright sunshine was recorded, and on eight other days 13 hours or more. December’s normal is 226 hours, or nearly 100 less than that recorded during the month. , .
Only five points of rain fell, making it the second driest December on record, no rain at all falling in December, 1916. To add io other virtues, the month was abnormally calm; the daily run ot wind averaged only 167 miles, as against a, normal for December of 278. There wero no gales or strong winds throughout the month. The weather broke yesterday, and a quarter of en inch of rain was recorded up to 9 a.in. to-day.
