BOWLS

PEACE SHIELD TOURNEY

FIRST DAY'S RESULTS

FIVE RINKS UNBEATEN

Of the 30 links which engaged yesterday in the early rounds of section play in the Peace Shield tournament, under the control of the Gisborne and East Coast Bowling Qentre, five remained unbeaten yesterday afternoon, after three rounds had been completed. The undefeated rinks were those skipped by W. J. Mac Gibbon (Poverty Bay], in A section; J. W. H. Holmes (Gisborne) and JJ. Hartley (Poverty Bay) in the B section ; and D. G. Robertson (Poverty Bay) and S. McKenzie (Poverty Bay) in C section. The consistent play of the four Poverty Bay rinks mentioned was generally commented upon, as was also the occurrence of some unusually high scoring in several of the matches played during the day. Weather Conditions were kind to tile tournament organisers, though the fitful wind was a little hard on the players themselves at times. All three of the town clubs’ greens were in use for the big New Year attraction, which had drawn four rinks from as far afield as Opotiki and Taneatua. The greens were very keen, owing to the weather effects and a careful preparation for the tournament, and the visiting players extended their congratulations to the clubs' ground committees in this connection.

First-day matches in the three sections of the tournament resulted as under: — A SECTION —First Round. — J. S. Waite, W. Neal, L. Balfour, F. Williams (s) 20 v. J. K. Nasmith, W. A. Smith, T. F.
