MALARIA EPIDEMIC
COLOMBO, Dec. 27,
The malaria epidemic threatens the capital itself, and the general hospital is overcrowded.
The epidemic, although waning in some districts, is leaving a weakened and starved population. , It is thougnt that the prevailing un-p-.eccdented outbreak of malaria in Ceylon is due to the prolonged drought having driven disease-carrying mosquitoes from their usual haunts in the north-west of the island, where malaria is endemic.
Starting in the north-west (he epidemic spread to Kandy, the popular tourist resort, and is now threatening Colombo.
The Indian Government has sent 10,00011). of quinine, and further stocks are due from Batavia.
Hospitals in the affected areas are full, and new treatment centres have been opened.
